This session describes the equipment required for the administration of inhalation sedation. Details of the safety features and equipment checks are also covered.

Learning objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • describe the equipment required to deliver inhalation sedation
  • list the safety features of the inhalation sedation equipment
  • describe the safety checks for the inhalation sedation equipment

Inhalation sedation with nitrous oxide and oxygen is one of the recognised standard techniques of conscious sedation in the UK. It is easy to administer, has a wide safety margin, a rapid onset and recovery and is well accepted by the majority of patients.

Before commencing this session you should have completed:

  • Anxiety and pain control in dentistry/Non-pharmacological anxiety management/Behavioural management techniques in the anxious patient (141-0139)
  • Anxiety and pain control in dentistry/Inhalation sedation/Pharmacology of nitrous oxide (141-0145)

Dr Kathy Wilson is an Associate Specialist in Dental Sedation at Newcastle Dental Hospital.

Currently lecturing in the field of dental sedation and special care dentistry at undergraduate and postgraduate level, Kathy has extensive clinical experience in management of the anxious dental patient.

Kathy is also part of the Module Editorial Team at e-Den, and is Module Editor for Module 3 Anxiety and Pain Control in Dentistry.
