This session will cover the principles of surgical management of infections with particular application to the infections that a dental practitioner is likely to encounter in practice.

Learning objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • list the basic principles of the surgical management of infections
  • appropriately manage common infections encountered in the dental practice
  • identify a Ludwig’s angina
  • appropriately refer to the oral maxillofacial surgery (OMFS) team

This session will first discuss the principles of the surgical management of infections. We will then look at the common infections that the dental practitioner may encounter that require surgical consideration. These will be divided into intra-oral and extra-oral infections.

Entry Requirements / Prerequisites

Before commencing this session you should have knowledge of:

  • inflammation and its sequelae
  • anatomy of potential tissue spaces in the face and neck
  • causes of dental infections

Francine Mariko Ryba,
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon

Francine graduated from dentristry in 2002 from GKT. She then worked at GKT as a Dental House Officer for a year and went on to complete vocational training in London. Following this, Francine worked as an SHO in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery for 2 years at Barts and the London and at King’s College Hospital. Having found a passion for Maxillofacial Surgery she went on to study medicine at Barts and the London and graduated in 2009.

Francine is currently doing Core Surgical training in London and is based at St George’s Hospital, Tooting.
