Imaging techniques needed in periodontal diagnosis course for Dental Practitioners
Selection criteria for radiography are an important consideration when assessing periodontal disease. In addition, the practitioner should be aware of the specific appearances that should be looked for in the radiographs.
Learning objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- identify the appropriate radiographic examination for varying periodontal disease levels
- describe pathological features of periodontal disease on radiographs
The diagnosis of periodontal disease is primarily clinical.
Radiographs should only be prescribed after a thorough clinical assessment.
Before commencing this session you should have completed:

Fiona Carmichael qualified from Glasgow University in 1984. She obtained her FDS in 1988. After a spending some time as a lecturer in oral surgery, she started training in dental and maxillofacial radiology. She completed her training at Leeds Dental Insitute having obtained the DDR from The Royal College of Radiologists in 1996 and completing an MSc in Oral Pathology.
She was made a consultant in Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology in 2000 at Leeds. She has been involved in previous teaching modules for the Royal College of Radiologists.
