Identifying Unhealthy Weight and Risk Factors for Weight Gain course for GPs
This session looks at how to measure excess weight in children and adults, and discusses the causes of obesity including those that may present outside of lifestyle-related obesity.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Describe how to assess obesity in adults and children, and how to interpret the results of these measurements
- Describe medical, genetic or drug-related causes of obesity
- Explain when tests for comorbidities should be considered
- Describe some common factors contributing to lifestyle-related obesity in adults and children
- Describe some common factors contributing to and promoting maintaining a healthy weight or preventing excess weight gain
Obesity is highly prevalent in England, impacting on individuals physically, psychologically and socially, and on the nation as a whole in terms of the impact on the NHS and the economy.

Since 2013, Jamie has led Public Health England’s Obesity and Healthy Weight team and is responsible for working across PHE and with national and local partners, to develop and deliver action to prevent and tackle excess weight.
This includes action on preventative whole systems approaches; developing the evidence base and support to local public health teams on weight management services and contributing towards strategic planning.
A Registered Public Health Nutritionist, he has worked within Government nutrition since 1998, including providing expert advice across Government on school food, cooking skills and early years nutrition. In addition, to Jamie’snutrition expertise, he also studiedfor aMSc in Health Policy, graduating with distinction from Imperial College London. Jamie was awarded the Nutrition Society’s Public Health Nutrition Medal 2015, in recognition of excellence in public health nutrition.
