This session describes the advanced management of hypoxaemia and hypercapnia in mechanically ventilated patients.

Learning Objectives

  • List the important causes of hypoxaemia and hypercapnia during positive pressure ventilation
  • Describe the management of hypoxaemia during mechanical ventilation
  • Describe the management of refractory hypoxaemia in severe Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome
  • Describe the management of hypercapnia during mechanical ventilation
Prerequisites

Before commencing this session you should complete session:

  • Invasive Ventilation 1: Indications, Initial Settings, Basic Modes, Complications (001-0273)

Mechanical ventilation is the most commonly applied organ support used in the ICU.

This session reviews the management of a deterioration in arterial blood gases during mechanical ventilation, hypoxaemia and hypercapnia. It also looks at ventilator strategies available for managing refractory hypoxaemia in Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS).
