This session looks at the potential role of hypnosis in anxiety and pain control in dentistry.

Learning objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • explain what is meant by the term 'hypnosis'
  • list the main uses of hypnosis in the management of dental patients
  • describe the basic principles of hypnosis

Hypnosis is the subject of great controversy and popular misunderstanding. Most people’s ideas are derived from what they have read in works of fiction or seen on television or on the stage. As a result, hypnosis is often believed to be mysterious and even somewhat sinister.
