This session covers the causes, investigation and management of hip pain in adults, and includes a discussion of the indications for referral and complications of total hip replacement.

Learning objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • describe the main differential diagnoses of hip pain in adults
  • apply the basic principles of history and examination of the painful hip
  • describe in detail the non-operative management of the painful hip
  • explain when and why to refer for a specialist opinion
  • describe the advantages and disadvantages of hip replacement to a patient

Hip pain in childhood, trauma and medical management of inflammatory arthritis affecting the hip are not covered in this session.

Paul Partington,
Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust,
MBBS FRCS FRCS (T&O)

Paul was an undergraduate in University of Newcastle upon Tyne and did his orthopaedic training in Newcastle and London, Ontario, Canada.

Hid clinical interests include hip and knee arthroplasty and revision surgery and hip arthroscopy.

He is a former Training Programme Director and is currently a Special Advisory Committe member for Trauma and Orthopaedics.

He is a content author for the e-LfH programme on the e-GP project.

David Townshend,
Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, North Tyneside General Hospital,
FRCS (Orth)

David was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. He went to medical school in Newcastle upon Tyne, where he also did his basic and higher surgical training.

He undertook a research fellowship in Dunedin 2004-5, New Zealand and an Educational fellowship in Foot and Ankle Surgery at the University of British Columbia, Canada 2009-10.

David’s specialist interests include ankle arthritis, ankle replacement and ankle arthroscopy, hip and knee arthroplasty.

He is a co-author of an e-GP session for the e-LfH programme.
