Introduction

Welcome to this session on the management of heart failure in secondary care. In this session you will learn about  the role of secondary care in:

  • the diagnosis of heart failure
  • the medical treatment of heart failure
  • device treatment for heart failure
  • the management of acute heart failure

The prevalence of heart failure

The incidence and prevalence of heart failure is expected to rise in future as a result of:

  • an ageing population
  • improved survival of people with ischaemic heart disease (IHD), especially post-myocardial infarction (MI)
  • more effective heart failure treatments
  • incidence or prevalence of patient comorbidities including:
    • hypertension
    • chronic heart disease (CHD)
    • obesity
    • diabetes
    • chronic kidney disease (CKD)

At the end of this session you will:

  • list the methods to diagnose heart failure
  • state the medical treatment of heart failure in secondary care
  • list the different types of device used to treat heart failure
  • explain the management of acute heart failure
