This session will describe how to best take care of adult patients presenting with hearing difficulties, as well as how to assess and manage those who require referral to first and second levels of audiology care.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Recognise patients with hearing impairment
  • Differentiate hearing problems (type, degree, rate of progression, laterality)
  • Appropriately refer the patient

Hearing difficulties are common and often remain untreated or unaided for years.

Consulting currently happens at an average of about 10-12 years after a patient/family notices the problem (Davies, 2007). By this time, it may already be causing a significant disability for the patient.
