This session looks at the epidemiology of hearing loss and the impact it has on development, learning and behaviour. It will also cover the treatment and management of hearing impairment in school age children.

Learning objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Describe the epidemiology of hearing loss
  • Explain the impact of different degrees and types of hearing loss
  • Describe the emotional and behavioural impact of hearing loss
  • Describe issues in identification and assessment of hearing problems including the school hearing screen
  • Explain principles of treatment and management of hearing impairment in school

Bernie Borgstein,
Consultant Paediatric Audiovestibular Physician, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust

Dr Borgstein qualified from the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine in 1981 and, following a 3 year attachment in Malawi, returned to the UK to train in paediatrics (with an emphasis on community paediatrics) and paediatric audiovestibular medicine. She has worked and trained at Great Ormond Street Hospital, King’s College Hospital, and St George’s Hospital. She completed the MSc in Audiological Medicine at UCL in 1998 and has worked in paediatric audiovestibular medicine at St George’s and since 2003 in her current post at St Mary’s Hospital. She is an enthusiastic clinician with much direct patient contact and has also had to take on major roles in management, service development. She is honorary senior lecturer at UCL and Imperial College. She was Team Leader for the Kensington Chelsea and Westminster Newborn Hearing Screening Programme until Oct 12 and has been a longstanding consultant member of the Newborn Hearing Screening Programme Quality Assurance team. She teaches medical students, paediatricians, MSc students, audiologists and audiology nurses and leads a rolling programme of audiology training for school nurses and health visitors. She is chair of the local Childrens Hearing Services Working Group, is a regular presenter at National Deaf Childrens Society newly diagnosed family weekends and, as deputy chair of the Local Negotiating Committee and a member of the BMA Consultants Committee and its paediatric subspecialty lead, is active in the medical political arena both locally and at national level. She is a member of the North West London ACCEA.
