This unit of study is designed to optimise the student’s understanding of what it is like to age in today’s society. It provides an opportunity to critically evaluate attitudes, myths and stereotypes associated with ageing, allowing students to explore the challenges that an ageing population presents for society and the health care system. The unit of study explores the demographics of older people, key issues influencing the quality of life and independence, and health promotion strategies that contribute to a positive ageing experience. Australian aged care reform, legislation and policy are also discussed.
