Health Promotion in Pregnancy: Obesity course for Nurses
This session aims to raise awareness regarding obesity in pregnancy and its contribution to increased morbidity and mortality for the woman and her baby.
Learning objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Describe appropriate standards of care for obesity in pregnancy
- Outline the morbidity and mortality associated with obesity during pregnancy
- List the different health promotion interventions that assist in reducing the risks associated with obesity during pregnancy
This session aims to raise awareness about obesity in pregnancy. This session also looks at how obesity has contributed to the increase in the morbidity and mortality of pregnant women and their babies.

Dr Oteng-Ntim has been a Consultant Obstetrician at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust since 2004. His postgraduate training was at Hammersmith and Queen Charlotte’s, West Middlesex and Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.
Eugene has vast experience with regards to community obstetric care in urban areas, obesity in pregnancy and reproductive health, the care of mothers with severe perineal and pelvic floor trauma following childbirth, and haemoglobinopathy in pregnancy.
He provides leadership and support to his peers and junior members of staff and contributes significantly to the governance agenda, driving forward evidence based standards of practice for all staff within maternity services. His collaboration with primary care colleagues and public health consultants has contributed significantly to the quality agenda within maternity services.
Contributing to his repertoire of education and skills, Eugene has been awarded a business diploma by the Institute of Directors. He is past President of the Maternity and Newborn section at the Royal Society of Medicine, RCOG representative for National Obesity Research Alliance, a community governor for the First Parent Promoters School and a trustee for ‘Right from the Start’.
Eugene has published in the area of obesity in pregnancy, prevention of postpartum haemorrhage and sickle cell disease in pregnancy and is currently a part-time doctoral student at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine at the Department of Epidemiology and Population Health. He is principal investigator on United Kingdom Obstetric Surveillance System grant for women with sickle cell disease in the United Kingdom who are pregnant. He is also Principal investigator on two other grants for obesity in pregnancy.
Nina Khazaezadeh is a Consultant Midwife in Public Health and Supervisor of Midwives at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Foundation Trust. She is experienced in working with the acute and primary care Trust in driving forward midwifery vision in promoting normality and in implementing government policy at both national and local levels.
She is a specialist advisor on issues relating to midwifery practice and clinical leadership, and has developed and evaluated innovative services, e.g. vaginal birth after caesarean section (VBAC) services, supporting women with tocophobia, obesity in pregnancy and postnatal clinics.
Nina has, in collaboration with Primary Care colleagues, employed various strategies to reinforce health promotion with the aim to reduce health inequalities and support midwives to develop their skills in areas such as smoking cessation, breastfeeding and teenage pregnancy.
