Fractured Cusps course for Dental Practice
The dental surgeon and their team need to be able to manage the symptomatic and structural problems associated with tooth fractures effectively and efficiently in order to help their patient and attain best clinical practice. This session will outline the prevalence, aetiology, diagnosis and treatment of fractured teeth, to enable a management strategy to be established for the dental team.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Describe the incidence and aetiology of tooth and cusp fractures
- Identify the numerous tooth fracture classifications
- Diagnose and assess the prognosis of fractures
- List the various management options
Tooth fractures have been described as ‘significant dental disease’, which creates problems for both patient and clinician.
Simon is a part-time Consultant in Restorative Dentistry and Oral Rehabilitation with the Head and Neck Oncology Team at Poole Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in Dorset.
He also runs a specialist referral practice in Poundbury in Dorchester for all aspects of restorative dentistry and dental implantology, as well as undertaking medicolegal reporting.
Previously he was a Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at Torbay Hospital from 2003-2009, providing advice and treatment for referring GDPs, and restorative care in the multidisciplinary management of oncology, cleft and hypodontia patients. He was also a trainer for the Specialist Registrar Programme at Bristol Dental Hospital.
Simon became involved in tooth fractures during his MSc research project at the University Dental Hospital of Manchester in 1997 and has written a number of papers and presented a new classification at the BSSPD Conference in 2002.
