Foot pain is a common presentation in primary care. This session considers patients presenting with heel, midfoot and forefoot pain and follows their presentation, assessment and management.

This session was reviewed by Khyati Bakhai and last updated in January 2022.

Learning objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • recognise, differentiate and evaluate the causes of common foot problems
  • complete a holistic assessment of the impact of foot pain on the individual
  • formulate an evidence-based management plan for the treatment of foot pain, which appreciates the role of the podiatrist in the management of foot problems
  • refer foot problems appropriately to secondary care colleagues
  • provide advice to patients on the importance of footwear and simple exercises for foot problems

Medical practitioners may lack knowledge of foot problems. This probably reflects lack of emphasis on foot problems in medical training at all levels.
