First Prescription of Oral and Patch Contraception course for GPs
This session emphasises the importance of teaching use of user dependent contraceptive methods and demonstrates how this can be done in practice.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- State the choices of user dependent, oral (combined and progestogen-only pills) and patch contraception
- Explain the history and examination required before starting the oral contraception or the patch
- Discuss the contra-indications to oral and patch contraception
- Demonstrate how to teach oral and patch contraceptive use when starting for the first time
Oral contraception continues to be the most commonly used method of contraception, after condoms. This is despite development of, and increasing availability of, alternatives.
Before commencing this session you should:
- Complete the preceding introductory sessions in the Sexual Health and Contraception module
- Complete session GPS_11_004 Contraceptive Choice
Alison has worked as a GP in Birmingham since graduating from the city's in 1986.
She has a special interest in contraception and sexual health and training and facilitates both the contraception unit of the Postgraduate Award in Sexual Health (Warwick University) and Birmingham’s SHIP (Sexual Health in Practice) programme.
