This session was reviewed by Khyati Bakhai and last updated in June 2020.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • State the choices of user dependent, oral (combined and progestogen-only pills) and patch contraception
  • Explain the history and examination required before starting the oral contraception or the patch
  • Discuss the contra-indications to oral and patch contraception
  • Demonstrate how to teach oral and patch contraceptive use when starting for the first time

Oral contraception continues to be the most commonly used method of contraception, after condoms. This is despite development of, and increasing availability of, alternatives.
