This session will familiarise you with the various ways a child may present with growth faltering. It will demonstrate how to evaluate and manage the situation yourself and when to refer on for more specialist input.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Identify a range of factors associated with weight faltering
  • Explain what should be done if you have any concerns about a child’s health
  • Identify what information can be obtained from a dietary assessment and make recommendations based on this
  • Identify the main features to observe at mealtimes and provide feedback to parents
  • State when and why you should refer the child on to other agencies

That is why it is so important that we work sensitively and confidently with families, correctly identifying the nature of the difficulties and providing advice that will start to address them, rather than heightening the anxieties of the family further.
