Facial pain - principles and management course



This session describes the presentation of clinical cases together with the options for treating pain mediated by the trigeminal system.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- List the important things to cover when diagnosing the cause of facial pain
- Describe the presentation of trigeminal neuralgia, the most common trigeminal autonomic cephalalgias and trigeminal neuropathic pain
- Describe the treatment options for trigeminal neuralgia, the most common trigeminal autonomic cephalalgias and trigeminal neuropathic pain
Healthcare professionals need to be aware of the challenges of diagnosing and treating facial pain. Common facial pain includes trigeminal neuralgia, trigeminal neuropathic pain and trigeminal autonomic cephalalgia.


Since qualifying as a physician from Vinnica Medical University, Ukraine, in 1996, Rajiv has worked and trained in India until 2003. He subsequently received his higher training at the Stoke School of Anesthesia and pursued Advanced Pain training at The Walton Centre Liverpool, where now he works as a Consultant in Pain Medicine.
Rajiv Chawla is committed to the field of medical education, research and development with the aim of improving standards of medical practice and developing Pain medicine. His main areas of interest are facial pain, pelvic pain and pain management programmes.
