Eye Assessment and Examination course for GPs
This session will help you to conduct a quick, general examination of the eyes of an adult in a primary care context. This session was reviewed by Sally Higginbottom and last updated in February 2015.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Follow a logical approach to assessing and examining the eye in primary care
- Carry out a routine general examination of the eyes of an adult within two minutes, including a measure of visual acuity and pinhole testing
- Conduct a basic assessment of central and peripheral vision (the visual fields)
- Examine the external, anterior and supporting structures of the eye
- Carry out a basic, direct ophthalmoscopic examination and describe other eye examination techniques
Every day in the UK, around 100 people start to lose their sight. Yet about half of this sight loss is considered preventable.
Stella Hornby is currently clinical lead for Ophthalmology and Lead for the Eye Emergency Department in Oxford Eye Hospital.
She has a special interest in emergency eye care, primary care ophthalmology, diabetic retinopathy, low vision and education and is particularly known for her skills in diagnosis and her ‘down to earth’ common sense approach to medicine.
Stella is a Partner in Primary Care Ophthalmology LLP which organises training courses for GPs. She is also Annual Primary Care Ophthalmology Conference and RCOphth representative for Map of Medicine, Primary and Community Eye Health Committee (Vision2020) and the primary care representative of the RCOphth Professional Standards Committee.
Caroline Mawer is a GP. She has previously worked as a Consultant in Public Health and as a Service Commissioner.
Caroline works part-time, mainly in the Tower Hamlets OOH service. The rest of the time she writes, especially about Iranian history and culture. Her first book is called: A Single Girl’s Guide to Rural Iran.
Caroline went on an RCGP ophthalmology course to increase her skill level in fitting eye exams into standard GP practice and has since contributed to the session on Examination and Assessment of Eyes in Primary Care.
