Epidemiology and the Burden of Pain course for Nurses
This session explains how the prevalence and consequences of acute and chronic pain affect both individuals and society as a whole.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Identify the prevalence of acute and chronic pain in the general population
- Describe the impact of chronic pain on quality of life and socio-economic status
- Explain how the burden of pain affects society as a whole
- Identify risk factors for the development of chronic pain
The impact of pain on the individual, the healthcare system, the economy and society means that pain is a huge burden and the importance of managing this condition successfully cannot be underestimated.
Rob is an Anaesthetist and Pain Management Consultant in Cornwall.
His research interests are in acute neuropathic pain and he is a member of the professional standards committee of the Faculty of Pain Medicine.
Rob is a module editor and content author for the e-PAIN project.
