This session presents a basic guide to engaging children and young people in a one to one interview. It describes how to prepare for the meeting and how to adapt the setting and your manner for different age and ethnic groups. It offers activities to help conversation flow. It gives examples of how to get the most out of your first encounter with a young person.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Use the guidance provided in this session to interview children or young people in a one to one setting
  • Describe how to prepare for the meeting
  • Describe how to adapt the setting
  • Identify the manner to be used for different age and ethnic groups
  • Identify how to get the most out of your first encounter with a young person
  • Identify activities to help conversation flow
  • Explain the importance of confidentiality and duty of care

This session uses self assessments that help you check what you have learnt. You do not have to use them and your answers are not seen by anyone else.

Entry Requirements / Prerequisites

Before commencing this session you must:

  • Have a legitimate professional role, an advanced Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) clearance and be cognisant of legal restrictions, laws of consent involving minors, duty of care and code of ethics via professional registration

Margaret was trained at the Tavistock clinic, London and has had a life-long interest in young people in public care.

She is the author of Psychotherapy with Young People in Care: Lost and Found (2001); contributed to Horne A. and Lanyado M. (eds.) The Handbook of Child Psychotherapy (1999 and 2009) and Luckock and Lefevre, Direct Work: Social Work with Children and Young People, British Agencies for Fostering and Adoption Publications (2008).

Margaret is a Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist in a busy CAMHS team (Herts Partnership Foundation NHS Trust.)
