Employment Legislation course for GPs
This session examines the concepts of equality and diversity. It considers how legislation and policy serve to ensure that people are treated fairly whether they are employees, or receiving care.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Identify what is meant by equality and diversity in the context of working in healthcare and delivering healthcare services
- Examine key pieces of legislation relevant to equality and identify the responsibilities these place on individuals and organisations
- Identify how equality and diversity considerations can influence the development and delivery of services
- Identify how equality and diversity considerations influence human resource policy and practice
- Demonstrate your contribution to clinical leadership by identifying areas of potential discrimination and ways to address them
All of these activities have equality and diversity implications which it is important to be aware of. Legislation and policy exist to ensure that people are treated fairly and equitably.

Tony Lewis MA MB is a retired GP and medical academic.
He has been involved in medical education throughout his career including being Regional Advisor for General Practice for Devon and Cornwall. He was also retained to advise on the development of health services and primary care in Ghana, Turkey, Turkmenistan and Khazakstan.
As senior lecturer in General Practice, he was a key player in developing the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry, and was lead for Problem Based Learning in the college.
He has a particular interest in small group work, leadership in small groups and optimising learning for all health professionals. As an appraiser for Devon PCT, he developed an interest in leadership, management and values based decisions and how health care professionals interpret these in their day to day work.
As a trained coached and member of the International Coaching Federation, Tony has coached many health professionals, especially medical practitioners. In 2005 he co-authored the book “Coaching for Effective Learning: A Practical Guide for Teachers in Healthcare”. Since retiring, Tony now works on a freelance basis providing coaching to medical and senior staff in healthcare.
