Elder Abuse course for GPs
This session considers the challenging topic of elder abuse, including how to identify it and how best to institute a management plan. This session was reviewed by Khyati Bakhai and last updated in March 2015.

Shane O’Hanlon is a Consultant in Elderly Care at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, Reading. He works in surgical liaison and with the Macmillan COCOC (Comprehensive Care for Older People with Cancer) team. He works closely with primary care teams in this role and has a passion for medical education.
Professor Desmond O’Neill MA MD FRCPI AGSF FRCP(Glasg) is a consultant physician in geriatric and stroke medicine at Trinity College Dublin and the Adelaide and Meath Hospital, Dublin, Ireland (www.ageandknowledge.ie).
Desmond has had a long standing interest in elder abuse since writing up the first case reported in the Irish biomedical literature in 1990, and has successively been the Chair of the Irish government Working Party on Elder Abuse (1998-2002) (which produced the national strategy ’Protecting Our Future’) and the Elder Abuse National Implementation Group (2002-2010) which oversaw implementation of this strategy. He has also been actively involved in research into elder abuse, most recently with Professor Jim O’Brien, University of Louisville, USA: together they guest-edited a special international issue of the Journal of Elder Abuse and Neglect.
In addition Desmond is the President of the Irish Gerontological Society and the European Union Geriatric Medicine Society, and has been the Chair of Council on Stroke of the Irish Heart Foundation, and a principal investigator of the Irish National Audit of Stroke Care (INASC) and the first Irish longitudinal study on ageing (HESSOP-2).
