This session examines how working within and across multidisciplinary teams to deliver and improve services can bring benefits to patients. This session contributes to the development of leadership in clinical settings.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Describe the range of teams and team structures that are found in healthcare settings, including those of which you are a part
  • List the advantages of working across networks to deliver and improve services
  • Identify the characteristics and benefits of multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) as well as any associated difficulties
  • Demonstrate your contribution to leadership by identifying action to improve the way clinical teams function

Teams in healthcare will vary significantly their structure, purpose, task, setting and members. Frequently, team membership is fluid and teams lack clear boundaries.

Andrew Brittlebank,
Consultant General Adult Psychiatrist

Dr Andrew Brittlebank is a Consultant General Adult Psychiatrist, based in Northumberland. He is Director of Medical Education for Northumberland Tyne and Wear Trust and Associate Dean for Postgraduate Education for the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

Andrew’s interests include competency-based training and assessment, and leadership development and assessment. He has a Masters in Management and Leadership from Leeds University.

Outside work, he has been involved in the Scout Association as an adult leader and is a qualified outdoor instructor.

Emma Stanton,
Psychiatry Specialist Registrar

Dr Emma Stanton is a Psychiatry Specialist Registrar, seconded from 2009 - 2010 as a Clinical Advisor to the Chief Medical Officer at the Department of Health.

Emma was a founding member and has subsequently Chaired BAMMbino, the junior doctors arm of the British Association of Medical Managers and is an Emerging Leader to the National Leadership Council. She has an MBA from Imperial College, London, and is a Harkness Fellow in the U.S.A.

Emma’s interest in leadership and teamwork stems from her experiences competing in the Round the World Yacht Race 2005–6. She is co-editor of “Clinical Leadership: Bridging the divide” (Quay Books, 2009).
