The session looks at the interactions of dentally prescribed drugs with other common medications and discusses the important safety considerations for their use.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you should be able to:

  • List the drugs used in dentistry that are commonly associated with drug interactions
  • Describe common drug interactions with both the human body and with other drugs
  • Explain how normal drug dosages may need to be adjusted for use in dentistry
  • List the key questions to ask when taking a medical history

Drugs are prescribed in dentistry for a number of purposes including anaesthesia, anxiety management, infection control, oral hygiene, pain relief and sedation. In order to ensure that the correct prescribing decisions are made, dental practitioners need to understand the effects that the different types of drugs can have on the patient.

Before commencing this session you should be able to:

  • Use the dental practitioner’s formulary
  • Recognise different types of analgesic, antibacterial and antifungal drugs
  • Name and be familiar with the range of drugs used to augment the delivery of dental care
