Difficulty in Breathing course for Nurses
This sessions covers dyspnoea, its definition, causes and management. The session will then look at some specific conditions and the role of non-invasive ventilation (NIV).
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Recognise dyspnoea and its causes
- Detail pharmacological and non-pharmacological management of dyspnoea
- Specify how to start home oxygen therapy
- Describe the role of assisted ventilation in children with neuromuscular conditions
This session defines dyspnoea and looks at its possible causes. It then considers the pharmacological and non-pharmacological management of dyspnoea including the use of home oxygen therapy and assisted ventilation.
Laura Roe is a general paediatric consultant with a special interest in oncology and paediatric palliative care working at the University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust and the Donna Louise Children’s Hospice.
