Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you should be able to:

  • Identify the different types of headache
  • List the clinical features of the most common headaches
  • Outline the pathophysiology of the different headaches
  • Explain how the different headaches should be managed

Dental patients can present with craniofacial pain disorders such as neurological conditions, temporomandibular joint disorder, facial pain and headaches. In such cases, the clinician needs to determine whether the disorder warrants immediate medical intervention or whether it will not be affected by the proposed dental treatment. In order to do this, accurate assessment and diagnosis is essential.
