This session reviews diabetic ketoacidosis. In particular, it looks at managing diabetic ketoacidosis in children and adolescents in line with the national guidelines recommended by the British Society for Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes (BSPED) and Diabetes UK, which are based on NICE guidelines.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Explain the importance of monitoring children and adolescents who present in diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA)
  • Identify how the treatment of children and adolescents with DKA differs from the treatment of adults with DKA
  • Describe the treatment of children and adolescents with DKA

It is important to understand that the treatment of children differs significantly from that of adults, with particular reference to fluid management due to the increased risk of cerebral oedema.

Dr Uday is a National GRID Trainee in paediatric endocrinology and diabetes at Birmingham Women’s and Children’s Hospital. Her area of interest is paediatric metabolic bone disease. She is the recipient of global challenges PhD scholarship at the University of Birmingham and her research focuses on skeletal effects of vitamin D deficiency.
