Having diabetes can have huge implications on quality of life, life expectancy and lifestyle. This session explores some of these issues and the impact that diabetes can have on psychosocial welfare.

- Describe the impact that diabetes can have on the quality of life of the individual
- Recognise the psychological co-morbidities that occur with diabetes
- Identify strategies to enable patients with diabetes to self-care
- Recognise the social implications of diabetes
- Recognise the role of national and community-based support groups for people with diabetes
Having diabetes can have huge implications on quality of life, life expectancy and lifestyle, and the potential impact that diabetes can have on psychosocial welfare is often underestimated.
Rupal Shah is a GP partner in Battersea in London. where she is the prescribing lead and is also a GP trainer.
Rupal has a special interest in diabetes, cardiovascular health and medical education. She has written two books for GPs in training (General Practice: The Clinical Survival Guide and Hot Topics for the MRCGP) and is an Associate Dean within the Multiprofessional Faculty Development Unit (London and South East) on behalf of Health Education England.
