This session was reviewed by Khyati Bakhai and last updated in May 2021.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- list the presentation and common causes of hyperprolactinaemia
- describe common presentations of both secreting and non-secreting pituitary adenomas
- describe the presentation of growth hormone disorders such as growth hormone deficiency and acromegaly
- outline the significance of postpartum pituitary insufficiency.
This session explores some of the key issues in relation to the diagnosis and investigation of functional and non-functional pituitary tumours in the primary care setting.
In particular, the session will cover symptoms and signs of pituitary insufficiency and its investigation and management.
A number of case studies are used to illustrate how patients may present to a primary care practitioner. The investigations and management of prolactinomas are looked at in particular detail.
By the end of this session you should have a sound understanding of what you need to do when taking a history and what to look for on examination.
