Diabetes Care | Care of People with Metabolic Problems: Diabetes | Diagnosis of Diabetes
Diagnosis of Diabetes
Session Overview
Description
This session focuses on the diagnosis of diabetes and pre-diabetes. It describes when we should and should not use HbA1c or the oral glucose tolerance test. The session also touches on monitoring options for diabetes.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Describe risk factors for and symptoms of diabetes
- Recognise different types of diabetes
- Define tests to identify and
- Diagnose different types of diabetes
- Discuss rarer types of diabetes
This session covers the diagnosis of different types of diabetes and touches on how people may monitor their diabetes.
The terminology and diagnosis of different states of hyperglycaemia have changed over recent years.
The terms 'impaired fasting glycaemia' and 'impaired glucose tolerance' have been grouped together under 'pre-diabetes' or 'non diabetic Hyperglycaemia (NDH)'.
We will look at the diagnosis of this. In the UK, most of the screening for type 2 diabetes (T2DM) is done via a non-fasting blood test (HbA1c), though random glucose and fasting glucose tests are still prominent in guidelines.
This session also looks at when the HbA1c test might not be appropriate and discusses the use of other tests including the oral glucose tolerance test for gestational diabetes. Finally, you will learn about maturity onset diabetes of the young (MODY) and latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA).
