Diabetes: the psychosocial implications
Session overview
Description
Having diabetes can have huge implications on quality of life, life expectancy and lifestyle. This session explores some of these issues and the impact that diabetes can have on psychosocial welfare.

This session was reviewed by Khyati Bakhai and last updated in September 2022.

Learning objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • describe the impact that diabetes can have on the quality of life of the individual
  • recognise the psychological comorbidities that occur with diabetes
  • identify strategies to enable patients with diabetes to self-care
  • recognise the social implications of diabetes
  • recognise the role of national and community-based support groups for people with diabetes

Having diabetes can have huge implications on quality of life, life expectancy and lifestyle, and the potential impact that diabetes can have on psychosocial welfare is often underestimated.

This session explores psychological issues associated with diabetes, such as depression and anxiety, and considers the strategies that can be used in the initial consultation to reduce the likelihood of patients developing these problems.
