This session reviews some of the common problems encountered by children with diabetes and long-term medical conditions at school. It describes some of the strategies used to overcome these problems to allow as full a participation in school life as possible.

Learning objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Describe the epidemiology and pathophysiology of childhood diabetes
  • Describe the psychosocial impact of diabetes on the child, family and school
  • Outline principles of good day-to-day and emergency management of diabetes enabling full participation in school
  • Discuss how the child, their family and the child's diabetes team can work with the school to manage more difficult diabetes
  • Describe specialist services and principles to support and promote full participation for children with rarer long-term serious disease

This session uses self assessments that help you check what you have learnt. You do not have to use them and your answers are not seen by anyone else.

Mark is a Paediatric Registrar on the Mersey training rotation. Mark has a long standing interest in paediatric diabetes and endocrinology.

Previous projects Mark worked on involved the production of regional growth charts for North Wales and incidence patterns of childhood diabetes in Scotland.
