Detrimental Effects Of Enforced Tooth Loss course for Dental Practice
This session will discuss the identification of the signs of unavoidable tooth loss in the developing dentition. It will cover assessment of the developing dentition, when tooth loss is inevitable and how to plan tooth loss to minimise the detrimental effects.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Define the problems that result from enforced tooth loss
- Discuss the ideal timing of tooth loss, when inevitable
- Explain the relevance of balancing and compensating extractions
Early loss of deciduous teeth can sometimes be unavoidable, most often due to caries or trauma. It can have serious detrimental effects on the permanent dentition which can be difficult and expensive to correct.
Before commencing this session you should:
- Have knowledge of the normal sequence of dental development
- Complete the following e-den sessions in Module 7 Management of the Developing Dentition/Space Maintenance:

Andrew gained his BDS from Liverpool in 2006. Following his VT year in a busy NHS practice he returned to the Liverpool Dental Hospital to undergo GPT training. During this year he completed his MJDF RCS qualification. Following his GPT year he then worked for 2 years in various hospitals around the Merseyside region as a maxillofacial SHO.
Andrew is currently an SpR in Orthodontics at Chesterfield and the Charles Clifford Dental Hospital.
Jonathan has been a Consultant Orthodontist at Chesterfield Royal Hospital since 1993. He is a MOrth Examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and an ISFE Examiner. He is also a member of the Angle Society of Europe, and one of only two British orthodontists with European Board Certification.
Jonathan is the author of over 85 peer-reviewed publications, a clinical editor for the Journal of Orthodontics, and a contributing editor to the Journal of Clinical Orthodontics. He was chairman of the British Orthodontic Conference from 2004 to 2006 and will be chairman of the World Orthodontic Conference to be held in London in 2015.
