This session describes the common structure of injectable local anaesthetics (LAs) along with their action on neurotransmission. It also discusses the effect the body has on LAs, from administration to excretion. The use of vasoconstrictors in dental LAs will be considered.

Learning objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • describe the common core structure of injectable local anaesthetic agents
  • describe the fundamentals of neurotransmission and the effects of local anaesthetic on neurotransmission
  • relate physiological conditions to local anaesthetic pharmacokinetics
  • describe how local anaesthetic agents are absorbed, distributed, metabolised and excreted
  • list and describe the vasoconstrictors used in dental local anaesthetic agents

This session provides an overview of the chemical structure of injectable local anaesthetic agents.

Before commencing this session you should have knowledge of:

  • cell membrane structure and basic physiology
  • common chemical nomenclature
  • common mechanisms of drug metabolism
  • basic neurotransmission
  • basic physiology of neurotransmitter sites and actions
