This session aims to enhance your knowledge and skills regarding oral health and factors that predispose to poor oral health. Promoting oral health in the infant and young child forms an integral part of this session.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Explain the importance of good oral health and identify the factors that predispose to poor oral health in infants and young children
  • Describe the early development of the primary dentition and occasional problems that occur in the young infant
  • Identify the causes of the common oral problems in young children
  • Give appropriate advice to parents/carers to improve the oral health of their child

This session will discuss the development of the primary dentition, common oral problems that occur in infancy, the common oral diseases and preventive advice for children and their parents or carers.

Elizabeth O’Sullivan (BChD, MDentSci (Paed Dent), FDS(Paeds), RCS(Eng), PhD) is a Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry at City Health Care Partnership Hull and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Leeds.

She is the Clinical Lead for Paediatric Dental Services at CHCP Hull and the British Society of Paediatric Dentistry representative for the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health.
