Dental Caries and Pulpal Responses course for Dental Practice

This session discusses the pathophysiological responses of the pulp to dental caries and the natural reparative processes of the tissues.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Describe the anatomical appearance of the dentine and pulp in caries
- Describe the natural repair response of the pulp to caries
- Describe the process of reactionary and reparative tertiary dentinogenesis
The dentine-pulp complex displays exquisite regenerative potential in response to injury. Carious lesions stimulate reparative responses from the existing odontoblasts or, if severe enough, stimulate differentiation of a new generation of odontoblast-like cells to secrete a tertiary dentine. This process however can be severely compromised with increasing inflammatory responses from within the pulp which eventually negate these repair processes and lead ultimately to abscess formation and pulpal necrosis.
Before commencing this session you should:
- Have an understanding of dentine and pulp histology and structure
- Have an understanding of dental caries
Dr Alastair J Sloan BSc (Hons) PhD CBiol MSB is a reader in Bone Biology and Tissue Engineering and Head of the Tissue Engineering and Reparative Dentistry research theme at the School of Dentistry, Cardiff University.
Alastair is an oral biologist with research interests in mineralised tissue regeneration, dentine/pulp repair and the role of stem cells in dentine repair, osteoimmunology and novel antimicrobial materials for clinical use. He graduated from the University of Wales in 1993 with a BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Sciences and from the University of Birmingham in 1997 with his PhD in Oral Cell Biology. He was a Wellcome Trust Postdoctoral Fellow prior to his appointment to Lecturer in Oral Biology at the University of Birmingham in 2000.
He was appointed Lecturer in Bone Biology at Cardiff University in 2005. He was appointed senior lecturer in 2007 and has held his current position since 2010.
