This session will discuss the appropriate assessment of emergency patients with dento-alveolar infections; providing information on antimicrobial resistance, scientific evidence and guidelines for appropriate use of antibiotics in the management of infections.

Learning objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • list the problems associated with the inappropriate prescribing of antibiotics and the indicators for prescribing
  • describe how to assess an emergency patient presenting with a dento-alveolar infection and manage their treatment appropriately

Approximately 41 million antimicrobials are prescribed in primary care in England each year. 39.2 million prescriptions for oral antibiotics are dispensed in the primary care setting.

  • know how to use the British National Formulary
  • be aware of drug interactions and be able to write a prescription

Nikolaus Palmer,
General Dental Practitioner

Dr Nikolaus Palmer qualified at Liverpool University and has worked as a general dental practitioner for over 30 years. He completed a PhD on antibiotic prescribing and lectures extensively to postgraduate students on the use of antibiotics in dental practice. He actively researches in the area and has published a number of papers on the subject.
