Definitions and Mechanisms Underlying Pain course for Nurses
This session begins by defining the key terms used in the diagnosis and management of pain. The differences between nociceptive and neuropathic pain are then discussed. The basic anatomy and physiology involved in pain transmission is explained as understanding this will help you to manage pain appropriately.
Objectives:
By the end of this session, you will be able to:
- Define the key terms used in the diagnosis and management of pain
- Differentiate between nociceptive and neuropathic pain
- Identify the basic anatomy and physiology involved in pain transmission and understand why it matters in pain management
Dr Margetts is a Consultant in Anaesthetics and Pain Medicine. She has been a consultant since 2009 and works at Torbay Hospital, South Devon.
