This session aims to outline type 2 diabetes mellitus and how to diagnose it in children and young people. It also includes some diagnostic challenges.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Define type 2 diabetes in children and young people
  • Describe how type 2 diabetes is different from other forms of diabetes, in particular type 1 diabetes
  • Outline the diagnostic challenges in diagnosing type 2 diabetes
  • List risk factors and high prevalence groups for type 2 diabetes
  • Explain the diagnostic criteria of type 2 diabetes

This session outlines the definition of type 2 diabetes in children and young people (CYP).

Entry Requirements / Prerequisites

Before commencing this session, it is recommended that all the sessions from Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus and Ongoing Management of Type 1 Diabetes be completed.

Jan Idkowiak,
Clinical Lecturer in Paediatric Endocrinology

an is National GRID Trainee in Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes at the Children’s Hospital in Birmingham and NIHR Academic Lecturer at the University of Birmingham. 

He has been awarded with a PhD on his thesis on the molecular regulation of androgen biosynthesis in 2015. 

He is interested in androgen excess and deficiency conditions, obesity and early markers of metabolic disease progression.

Consultant Paediatrician in Diabetes and Endocrinology at Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust

Dr Chizo Agwu. MBBS, MRCP, PCME, MSc, FRCPCH is also an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer/Deputy Admissions Tutor at University of Birmingham and RCPCH Principal Regional Examiner for West Midlands.
