Decisions: How they are Made course for GPs
This session explores the processes behind decision making in individuals, teams and organisations as well as within the context of leadership. It considers how decisions are influenced and explores mechanisms that ensure that decisions are robust.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Describe the decision-making process as it applies to individuals, teams and organisations
- Explore how systematic approaches can ensure that decisions are robust
- Explain how decisions within an organisation impact on teams, individuals and patients
- Consider how decisions can be positively and negatively influenced by a range of factors
- Discuss evidence-based decision making in the context of leadership and management
A group has to make decisions, whether to act or not, what to prioritise, how to communicate. The way decisions are made and the final outcomes are inherently part of leadership and influence by group members.

Bob has developed his interest in clinical leadership through his experiences training and working as a paediatrician and medical educationalist at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, and in other roles across London. He has developed a number of work-based leadership development initiatives, including ‘Paired Learning’, and was involved in supporting the NHS Institute’s Enhancing Engagement in Medical Leadership project team in their work around the Medical Leadership Competency Framework.
