Cysts of the Oral Cavity: Bone Cysts course for Dental Practice
This session describes the basic clinico-pathological features of bone cysts that present within the maxillofacial skeleton.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Describe the basic clinical presentation of bone cysts
- Recognise the basic histological features of common odontogenic cysts
- List the differential diagnoses of odontogenic and non-odontogenic tissue cysts
- Describe the basic management of bone cysts
A range of cysts occur within the mouth, some of these are common and may be seen on a fairly regular basis (i.e. mucous extravasation cysts), whereas others are rare but have typical clinico-pathological presentations.
Before commencing this session you should:
- Commonly used histological terms
- Normal radiographic anatomy
- Radiographic features of odontogenic and non-odontogenic cysts
Adam qualified at Cardiff Dental School in 2001 and undertook vocational training at Swansea. Following this he gained SHO experience in Periodontology, Oral Medicine, as well as Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
Subsequently, Adam was appointed as a Specialist Registrar/Honorary Lecturer in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology at the Sheffield NHS Teaching Trust/University of Sheffield. During this time, he completed his PhD on ’The role of ADAM – integrin interactions on epithelial cell behaviour’ and gained his FRCPath from the Royal College of Pathologists. Adam is now a Consultant/Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board.
