Creativity and New Solutions course for GPs
In this session you will look at the importance of creativity, improvisation and innovation. You will explore aspects to consider when formulating improvements in the patient experience. This session supports the development of leadership in clinical settings.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Explore the notions of creativity, improvisation and innovation
- Consider situations where creative approaches are useful
- Identify what has to be taken into account when encouraging new ways of thinking
- Describe your contribution to leadership by identifying how you will share your ideas on improving patient care in your service
Before commencing this session you should complete these sessions in the Introductory Module:
- Introduction to Leadership and LeAD
- Introduction to Medical/Clinical Leadership Competency Framework
Penny has a varied background combining a clinical profession with higher education, research, and service general management. Recently she has been working with the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement and the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges on the Enhancing Engagement in Medical Leadership project, including contributing to establishing the Medical Leadership Competency Framework, and specifically taking a lead for post graduate training. Penny is the Clinical Lead for the e-learning programme LeAD, both for medical leadership (through the AoMRC) and for clinical leadership (through the NHS Leadership Academy, and previously the National Leadership Council).
Posts in the NHS have included: Policy Lead in a Strategic Health Authority for leadership and diversity; Service General Manager for quality and education in an NHS Trust; and research supervisor and module leader for the multi-disciplinary MSc in Healthcare at the University of Exeter. Penny was Associate Lecturer in the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry Graduate School, specifically teaching on M.Ed. in Clinical Education, and Professional Skills for specialist registrars. Now working on a freelance basis, Penny has been offering training, facilitation and coaching to the public sector, especially senior staff and teams in healthcare.
