CPD Masterclass: Medical Emergencies
Managing a medical emergency is vital to best practice dentistry.
Overview:
This Masterclass provides the opportunity to ensure your knowledge in being able to identify and respond to a medical emergency in dental practice is proficient and up-to-date. It will also equip you with the skills to ensure your patients, in the event of an emergency, receive the best possible care from a skilled and educated practitioner.
Learning Outcomes:
- Preparation for a medical emergency, standards of care, emergency equipment and drugs
- Assessing a patient with clinical deterioration in the dental environment
- Latest evidence in cardiac arrest management
- Recognition and management of emergencies, including: acute coronary syndrome, adrenal insufficiency, allergy/anaphylaxis, asthma, choking, diabetes, fainting, seizures and stroke
This masterclass is particularly relevant to registered dental practitioners and their dental teams, especially those who have not recently undertaken a medical emergency course.

Ian is a critical care Registered Nurse, working 2 days a week as an Associate Nurse Unit Manager in a suburban (Melbourne) 10 bed Coronary Care Unit. His postgraduate qualifications include Certificates in intensive care/coronary care, accident emergency nursing, and midwifery in addition to a Bachelor of Educational Studies. He is the CEO of Australasian SOS Oxygen & First Responder Training P/L and represents Australasian SOS on the Australian Resuscitation Council Victoria Branch (Victoria Branch Treasurer). Ian’s educational role includes courses in medical emergencies / resuscitation for: • University of Melbourne dental students (undergraduate and postgraduate) • ADA Groups • Advanced Resuscitation for clinical staff at the Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne, and • Private and community health dental clinics.
