  • 10.5.2 Conduct an effective consultation with a woman with a raised BMI

Obesity levels are rising fast worldwide, and currently over half the women in the UK are estimated to be either overweight or obese. The definitions of overweight and obesity are based on Body Mass Index (BMI). BMI is calculated by dividing weight in kilogram (Kg) by height in metre-squared (m2). This is an indirect measurement of body fat. It is not perfect but can be calculated easily in clinic and is used in UK Medical Eligibility Criteria (UKMEC) guidelines to inform clinical practice.
