Consulting with Children course for GPs
This session gives an overview of the ways in which children differ from adult patients. It offers techniques that may assist effective consultation and overriding principles that must be taken into account.

Learning objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- list the ways in which children are exceptional patients
- explain child-friendly, age-specific techniques for consulting with children
- discuss issues of consent and advocacy that relate to child patients
Consulting with children and their parents is often a complex negotiation, but with some tools and confidence it can appear as simple as child's play.
Before commencing this session you should:
- have some knowledge of the ‘Gillick’ principle and the GMC Guidance on consent
- have some experience of consulting with families and children
