This session provides an overview of the prevalence and classification of congenital heart disease and the advances in care that have resulted in increased numbers of patients surviving with complex disease.

At the end of this session, you should be able to:

  • explain the prevalence of congenital heart disease and the advances in paediatric care that have resulted in increasing numbers of patients surviving into adult life
  • differentiate between simple, moderate and complex congenital heart disease
  • describe the breadth of services required to deliver lifelong care in line with NHS England standards for congenital heart disease services
  • explain the role of the non-specialist in caring for patients with congenital heart disease throughout their lifetime
  • explain the role of the congenital heart disease operational delivery networks in monitoring services against the NHS England standards and ensuring that care is delivered as close to home as possible
  • state how to contact your nearest congenital heart disease network and helplines
