Complications of Minor Oral Surgery course for Dental Practice
The aim of this session is to review the principles which are important in the delivery of safe and effective oral surgery. The importance of preoperative assessment, surgical planning and appropriate postoperative care will also be discussed.
Learning objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- describe the preoperative assessment of patients undergoing oral surgery
- explain the importance of planning surgical treatment to minimise the risk of the occurrence of complications following oral surgery
The extraction of teeth is a procedure commonly undertaken in both primary and secondary care settings.
After careful evaluation of the patient and through planning, extractions can be carried out in an effective and controlled manner.
Cathy studied at Sheffield University, then qualified from King’s College School of Medicine and Dentistry in 1991. She obtained her FDS RCS(Eng) in 1994 and then went on to complete an Msc in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Eastman Dental Institute in 1996.
She was appointed as a Consultant Oral Surgeon at King’s College Dental Hospital in 2008 and became Clinical Lead of the department a year later. She now manages a team of 30 oral surgeons and is involved in the delivery of a specialist service, undergraduate teaching and postgraduate training.
She has a particular interest in paediatric oral surgery.
Ayse graduated with Honours from King’s College London in 2006. She completed a year of vocational training in Brighton and then continued as a maxillofacial SHO in Guildford for 18 months. During this time she completed her MJDF (Eng). After working as a dental officer in Oxfordshire, she took a specialty doctor post in the oral surgery department at King’s College Hospital. In 2010, she was appointed as a StR in the specialty training programme in oral surgery and rotates between Guy’s Hospital and King’s College Hospital. She is also in the process of completing her Graduate Certificate of Academic Practice at King’s College London.
