Community Orientation course for GPs
GPs have an increasing role in planning and delivering healthcare. This session considers the learning outcomes described in the Community Orientation domain of the RCGP core curriculum and explores how to apply these to everyday situations. This session was reviewed by Suchita Shah and last updated in August 2014.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Describe the Community Orientation domain of the Royal College of General Practitioners' curriculum and the learning outcomes it contains
- Demonstrate an understanding of how health and social care interact in patient care
- Describe how the needs of an individual patient may conflict with those of the wider community
- Explain how inequalities in healthcare provision impacts on your work as a general practitioner
Community orientation introduces the concept of bearing some responsibility not only for the patient in front of you, and their family, but for the wider community in which you work as a GP, and the NHS as a whole. How healthcare is provided and rationed may put the wants of an individual in conflict with the needs of the wider community.
