Communication Skills course for Dental Practice
This session covers the basic principles of good communication and examines some of the common communication errors that may arise during a doctor’s interaction with both patients and colleagues.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Identify good communication skills as an essential clinical governance tool, necessary in the delivery of effective patient care
- Investigate the principles of good communication
- Recognise some of the common, but easily avoidable, communication errors in medical practice
- Identify how to improve your team playing skills through more effective communications with your colleagues and other agencies
Communication is based on dialogue not monologue and is usually an active process of negotiation that should be balanced. It requires objectivity and an active avoidance of any tendency to drive a personal agenda to the exclusive detriment of other peoples’ perspectives.
Before commencing this session you should:
- A clear understanding of the General Medical Council’s (GMC), ‘Good Medical Practice’ guidelines regarding communication
- Some awareness of a need to improve your own communication skills
Dr Chukwuma is a Consultant Psychiatrist with interests in Mental Health Law and Clinical Communications. His clinical practice ranges from General Adult Psychiatry to Rehabilitation and Forensic Psychiatry. He holds a research doctorate degree in Medicine; his research interests include health promotion and the cardiovascular health of people with severe mental illness.
