Clinical Priorities course for Dental Practioners
This session describes how to develop a prioritisation approach for treatment planning. It outlines how to grade presenting conditions, identify priorities and how to approach the timing of interventions.
Learning objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- describe the structure for grading presenting conditions
- identify the priorities when developing a care plan
- discuss the rationale for the timing of interventions
Dentistry is becoming more complex by the year. These changes reflect the demographic trends which affect society as a whole. In general, patients are retaining all or some of their teeth for longer.
Before commencing this session you should be able to:
- perform a competent patient history
- recognise the appropriate investigations required
- make a definitive problem list and treatment plan
Professor StJohn Crean BDS MBBS FDSRCS FFGDP(UK) FRCS FRCS(OMFS) PHD,
In October 2009, StJohn was appointed as Director of Dental Research Research and Knowledge Transfer, and since January 2010, he has been the Acting Head of the Institute of Post Graduate Dental Education at University of Central Lancashire (UCLan).
He was previously the Associate Director of Undergraduate Dental Studies and Year 3 Lead at Peninsula Dental School in Plymouth. He joined Peninsula Dental School from the post of Consultant in Oral Maxillofacial Surgery to North Glamorgan NHS Trust, with NHS duties at Royal Glamorgan and Prince Charles Hospitals, whilst holding an Honorary Professorship at University of Cardiff School of Dentistry.
StJohn is currently the Robert Bradlaw advisor at the RCS of England, working closely with the FDS and FGDP. He is also Associate Clinical Professor for the MSc in Dental Implantology at the University of Warwick and President of the BSOI.
StJohn holds numerous examinerships at home and abroad advising on the establishment of many dental undergraduate courses.
StJohn is also part of the Module Editorial Team at e-Den, and is Module Editor for Module 2 - Human Diseases and Medical and Dental Emergencies, Module 5 - Hard and Soft Tissue Surgery and Module 6 - Surgical and Non-Surgical Management of Head & Neck Disease.
